Back-to-work Thursday

Having been off for a week, for my birthday and to deal with State Fair, I have now returned to theBROADWAY and to my new colleague Jeremy! He is turning out to be a star already, and a quick learner, which is a great help. I am feeling instantly more relaxed and able to start planning some projects.

State Fair had its first night last night, which went really well (much better than the dress!) and despite the odd technical hiccup or forgotten line, it ran smoothly and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves. Plus we had over 100 people in, which was excellent compared to the 35 we thought we were going to get!

Lyrics of the Day:

"TONY:
Tonight. Tonight.
It all began tonight.
I saw you and the world went away

MARIA:
Tonight. Tonight.
There's only you tonight.
What you are, what you do, what you say.

TONY:
Today, all day I had the feeling
A miracle would happen --
I know now I was right.

TOGETHER:
For here you are,
And what was just a world is a star
Tonight!
Good night. Good night.
Sleep well and when you dream,
Dream of me.
Tonight.

(Reprise)

TONY:
Tonight. Tonight
Won't be just any night.
Tonight there will be no morning star.
Tonight. Tonight.
I'll see my love tonight
And for us, stars will stop where they are.

MARIA:
Today
The minutes seem like hours...
The hours go so slowly
And still the sky is light.
Oh, moon, grow bright
And make this endless day
Endless night, tonight!"
- 'Tonight' from West Side Story (Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim)

Sondheim's Blues

You'd never guess, but I'm actually really busy at work!! Am trying to sort out all the stuff for Jeremy's first couple of days, which happen while I'm on holiday from tomorrow until Wednesday, doing State Fair.

Lunchtime lyrics!
"Hello folks, it's me Stephen Sondheim,
don't go, folks, I won't be a pain.
No, no, folks, you'll still get a fond rhyme,
it's just I got a problem that I want to explain.
You see I'm under-produced of late, very ignored,
theatrical budgets are lean,
I get my respect, I get my award,
but as you suspect, you know what I mean?

I've got those 'everybody loves me but nobody will produce me' blues,
That 'isn't he a genius, but don't give him any money' feeling.
That 'isn't he a work of art? but not fun enough,
He's ok for elitist but not popular stuff',
Those 'don't put on my albums when you want some dinner music' feelings!
Those 'I won a lot of Tonys but my shows don't show a profit' blues.

D'you hear the one about Glenn Close? Ok this is good, ready?

She said she'll do Night Music, "Revival!" she says,
Isn't that a thrill? "Send in the clowns"
But then she gets an offer, "Much better" she says,
Cruella DeVille. "Puppies! Mwaahahaha"
The Dodgers say they'll back me, "We'll do it" they say,
"if you get Bernadette" - wow, a job.
But Bernadette is busy, "Forever!" she says,
"I'm tired of being your pet"

No, no Bernadette, Bernadette, say it isn't so!
"No, no, I can't stand you! I can't stand you!"

I just flew in from my workshop of Wise Guys,
and boy, are my rhymes tired. Hahaha! Now take Hal Prince. Please.

I've... got... those... 'everybody loves me but nobody will produce me' blues,
(everybody!) "Sondheim's bluuuues!"
That 'don't put on Assassins if you plan on disco dancing' feeling,
"Feeling!!"
That 'will you write a song for me like Losing My Mind?'
'If you want a star like me then kiss my behind!'
Those 'actors love my lyrics but they hate to memorise them' feelings...
Bla-bla-blues!
Those 'write for me, I need you,
Sondheim is prestigious',
As Julie Andrews told me once,
"You're brilliant but aggregious"

[...]
Those 'God that's good, but too weird,
What was that? What a genius,
Everybody loves my writing
But the wise list find it biting
Good, bad, start, stop,
Rich, broke, hit, flop,
Everybody loves me but nobody will produce me',
Bluuuuuuuuuuuuues!!!"

Lyrics of the Day - 'Being Alive'

"FRIENDS [frantically]:
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby baby...
Bobby bubbi...Robby...Robert darling...
Bobby, we've been trying to call you.
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby baby...Bobby bubbi...
Angel, I've got something to tell you.
Bob...Robbo...Bobby love...Bobby honey...
Bobby, we've been trying to reach you all day.
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby Baby...Angel...Darling...
The kids were asking--
Bobby...Bobby...Robert...Robby...Bob-o...
Bobby, there was something we wanted to say.
The line was busy...
Bobby...Bobby bubbi...
Bobby fella...Bobby sweetie--

ROBERT [speaking]: Stop!...What do you get? [Sings]
Someone to hold you too close,
Someone to hurt you too deep,
Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.

PAUL: That's true, but there's more to it than that.
SARAH: Is that all you think there is to it?
HARRY: You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but
Robert,
you haven't got one good reason for being alone.
LARRY: Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something.

ROBERT:
Someone to need you too much,
Someone to know you too well,
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell.

DAVID: You see what you look for, you know.
JOANNE: You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever
be a kid again, kiddo.
PETER: Hey, buddy, don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing
to be afraid of really is that it won't be.
JENNY: Don't stop now. Keep going.

ROBERT:
Someone you have to let in,
Someone whose feelings you spare,
Someone who, like it or not,
Will want you to share
A little, a lot.

SUSAN: And what does all that mean?
LARRY: Robert, how do you know so much about it when you've never
been there?
HARRY: It's much better living it than looking at it, Robert.
PETER: Add 'em up, Bobby. Add 'em up.

ROBERT:
Someone to crowd you with love,
Someone to force you to care,
Someone to make you come through,
Who'll always be there,
As frightened as you
Of being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive.

AMY: Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something!
Want *something*!

ROBERT:
Somebody, hold me too close,
Somebody, hurt me too deep,
Somebody, sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware
Of being alive,
Being alive.

Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive.

Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.

Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!"
- Being Alive, from Company by Stephen Sondheim

I had a lovely Easter weekend. I am very happy :-D

Wednesday 19 March 2008

Today...

I are be mostly binding Staff Handbooks.
It's very quiet!

Bring on the long weekend...

Lyrics of the day:

"My first crush on an Irish girl,
I was ten years old
And her name was Elaine.
Little red-head girl;
Well, she looked like you,
But if you were ten.
Which you’re clearly not.
Not that you look old,
But you get my...
I’ll just stop now.

Okay, wait, ‘cause I had a point -
No, I swear I did!
Well, I think I did,
Which is all my life
(Or since I was ten)
I have had a yen
For an Irish lass.
Because God knows why,
Like the ancient curse
Of the shiksa queens.

Do I talk too much?

Which is not to say
That I’d want Elaine,
Who turned out to be
(When I last checked in)
A Republican
And a parapsychologist.

If you’ve got a four-leaf clover,
You can make my dreams come true.
I will be your Hebrew slave:
Just do the things that Irish girls do.
Talk about potato famines,
I begin to cry on cue!
Sing about the Emerald Isle and
Get your Irish eyes to smilin’ -
I could be in love with someone like you.

I just left a relationship
With a lovely girl
Named Alyssa Levine.
She was really great,
It was all my fault -
I just got upset
‘Cause she slept with my brother.

So I made a vow
Not to get caught up
In the dating scene
Or the whole routine
With the cousin’s friend
Or the who-knows-what,
Like I need that shit.
I’ve got marks to make,
I’ve got steps to climb,
It’s the perfect time!
I’ve got books to write,
I’ve got things to do -
I go out my door
And bump into you,
And the jig is up,
And my vow is through!
I don’t know what I’m doin’,
But come in and ruin me!

I will write my own “Ulysses”
If you’re there to show me how.
Take me back to Glocca Morra,
Bathe me in the River Shannon now.
If you’ll be Mrs. O’Leary,
Baby, I will be your cow.
I’ll deliver shamrocks daily,
Buy your pa a new shillelagh,
I could be in love with someone like...

You could be my inspiration
And get me past this block,
And walk me through the Great Unknown.
You could be my true salvation,
Unchain me from this rock,
And keep me from being alone,
‘Cause I’m no good at being alone!

Take me to another level!
Let me play in bigger halls!
I will do a Riverdance
As long as you keep answering my calls!
Get me out of my apartment!
Keep me from my empty walls!
Someone hire John McCormack!
Start the Wearing of the Green!
Let me win the Irish Sweepstakes!
Let me take you home, Kathleen!
I can be in love with someone!
I can be in love with someone!
I can be in love with
Someone
Like you!"
- I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You, Jason Robert Brown

I realised I never wrote about how good Chris was in his end of term performance of Company at Arts Ed (which he was) - it was very interesting to watch Acting students do a Musical, I think they interpreted it very differently to how Musical Theatre students would have.

Last night my brother and Bean introduced me to a very funny guy on YouTube from the states called Bo Burnham - look him up, he's hilarious. And he's only 17! You should also look up 'Pachelbel Rant' on YouTube, especially if you've ever played the cello.

More interviews at work this afternoon, so more venue tours for me to give, then State Fair rehearsals tonight - we ran all the dances last night as it was Lauren's last rehearsal with us, (and because Ben the musical director couldn't make it) and we're going to try to run the whole show tonight if we can fit it into 2 hours! :S Last night was much better than Sunday, though, so it's definitely on-track.

*Yawns* I think I might eat some more oreos... (Krystle came back from her holiday in the states yesterday and brought them with her! Mmmm.)

Lyrics of the Day

"I was totally indifferent when it started,
Broken-hearted's not a thing I like to be,
So when he asked me to the movies,
I said that might be OK,
A decent way to spend an hour or two...or three.

I maintained a cool composure throughout dinner,
And I thought that he was nice, but nothing more,
And after some Chablis it's true,
There was a longing glance or two
While walking through the village to my door.

"I had a real nice time" I said,
And softly tilted back my head,
And if he was surprised he didn't look it.
I said "I don't usually do this,
But I got some tea upstairs..."
And he gently took my hand, and then...
He shook it.

Is there anything more sexy than an apathetic man?
What could possibly more set your soul on fire
Than a man who holds you to him,
With eyes of darkest brown,
Looks right through you with complete lack of desire?

No, there's nothing more arousing than an apathetic man,
Nothing builds your fever pitch to point of blister
Than a soft and sultry baritone
Who whispers in your ear,
"Well, I think of you more like, you know, a sister".

I used to think attentive men were better to adore,
Men who'd champagne, caviar and then endive me,
But nothing in the world can make my heart scream "Take me!" more
Than a man who says that he could take or leave me.

Is there any drug more potent than an apathetic man?
Friends have screamed at me to quit to no avail,
Why take chances on relationships with men that might work out,
When you've got one that you know is doomed to fail?

There's no better science project than the apathetic man,
Though he's really not a theory you can prove,
That won't stop you from the hundreds of experiments you'll try
Thinking you're the one who's gonna make him move.

So you'll don a fuzzy sweater in a lovely shade of pink,
Trace a sweet vanilla path behind your ear,
Then you'll bat your baby blue eyes as you sit upon his lap,
And he'll murmur "Oh that's right, are you still here?" !

Is there anything more swoony than an apathetic man?
Ladies try one, they are not too hard to find.
Why spend time on friends and family when you can spend your life
Wondering what the hell is going through his mind?

No there's nothing that's more moony than an apathetic man,
Though you're sure to make him yours the twelfth of...never!
So remember, if you want to love with passion unconstricted,
Bypass smitten, slightly interested and woefully conflicted,
For you'll find the vice that's sure to make you totally addicted
Is the apathetic man!"
Apathetic Man by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich

- Quite true, but never again! I suppose we all say that...
